Verenigde Staten

Na Italië, Frankrijk en Spanje is de VS de grootste wijnproducent in de wereld. Daarbij is Californië, met ongeveer 90% van de totale productie, de belangrijkste wijnstaat. Noord-Amerikaanse wijn is dus vaak Californische wijn. Twee andere interessante wijnstaten in het westen van de VS zijn Washington en Oregon. In het oosten is New York de belangrijkste wijnstaat.

In Californië is invloed van verkoelende lucht en mist vanaf de Stille Oceaan een bepalende terroirfactor. De wijnen hiervandaan zijn bijna altijd varietals: ze zijn gemaakt van één druivenras, waarvan de naam prominent op het etiket staat. Pas daarna komt de herkomst, in de vorm van een American Viticultural Area, afgekort als AVA.

Op grote schaal aangeplante rassen zijn cabernet sauvignon, de inheemse druif zinfandel en chardonnay. In opkomst zijn pinot noir en syrah. Pinot noir is de grote specialiteit in Oregon, terwijl Washington het Amerikaanse mekka voor riesling is.
